The Fall Checklist Nobody Signed Up For

At some point, fall became a checklist.

Nobody announced it. No one handed out the list. Yet every October, a great many people quietly work through the same set of tasks, and everyone else appears to be doing the same.

The Usual Items

Start with the pumpkin patch. You drive somewhere you would not normally drive, walk through mud you would not normally walk through, and pay a price for a squash that would have cost less in the store. There is usually a photograph involved.

Then the apple orchard. The apples are good. The line for the cider donut is long. Somebody in the group has a strong opinion about which variety is best, and it is never the one you picked.

The porch has to be done, too. Three pumpkins, a wreath, a blanket that nobody will sit on, and a scarecrow that has clearly had a long week.

Then there is sweater weather, which arrives on the first day it drops below seventy-five degrees and is announced with great confidence by people already wearing the sweater.

And everything must contain cinnamon. That includes items that have no reasonable connection to cinnamon.

What Is Actually Going On

The list is not the problem. Almost every item on it is a fine reason to be outside with people you like. The pressure is the strange part, the feeling that if you skip the orchard you have somehow failed at October.

You have not. A season is not a competition. Nobody is keeping score, and if they are, they are not scoring you.

Keep Two or Three

Here is a simpler approach. Pick two or three fall traditions your household actually enjoys, and do those well. Skip the rest without guilt.

If you love the orchard, go and stay all afternoon. If a quiet evening on the porch is the whole point, do that. If your family has a soup that appears every October, make it, and do not apologize for not also carving something.

The best traditions are the ones that survive without effort. If you have to force it, it is probably not yours.

Room for a Laugh

There is nothing wrong with poking a little fun at the checklist. It is one of the few things everyone shares in October. If you want a slower, quieter take on the same turn of the season, Porch Flag Weather covers the calmer side.

Enjoy the cider donut. Skip the scarecrow if it stresses you out. The leaves will turn either way.
